The new draft EU Horizon Europe has a research and innovation (RIA) action entitled "Controlling infection on large passenger ships" (Topic HORIZON-CL5-2021-D6-01-12). The expected results of this action are given below:

For our third ARCSAR Innovation and Knowledge Exchange event we will be concentrating on innovations in training and education.

As we all wrestle with COVID-19, I hope we can take good notes on how we structured our Rescue Coordination Centres to maintain the watch and protect our team members. As an example, JRCC Halifax moved from a floating schedule in which anyone could work with anyone to a four team approach. Teams remain working with each other during this time of social distancing to avoid cross contamination.

Many communities have good capabilities for local emergency response and have organized volunteers with local knowledge and valuable competence from various professions. There is a need to identify best practices of utilizing the voluntary and industry resources in the best possible way and to their optimal capacity.

The challenge aims to reduce the bulk of the equipment carried by the rescue personnel.

Cruise ships might be the first on scene when there is an oil spill in the Arctic. How can they be equipped to be an oil spill response asset.

We have a challenge on how to board people from VOO for eample fishing boats on to bigger vessels.

Coherent data (e.g. from similar exercises and training) is needed for analysis that may deliver reliable results on existing challenges in performance and capabilities, SOPs etc. Therefore a shared methodology to exercises and trainings of emergency preparedness and security actors is needed in order to gain larger amount of data in ANA region.

There is a challenge for the collection of information from crew and passengers involved in ship abandonments.

There is a need for technology to enhance training and awareness with a challenge for age appropriate multi-media technology for emergency situations.

There is a need for further live exercises to train for different types of incidents. This challenge can be also categorised under Pollution and Incident Control.

There is a need for enhanced development of Arctic simulators.

There is a need for specific training to deal with nuclear incidents.

There is a challenge for the development of advanced, ANA training materials for SAR teams.

There is a need for training and technology to fill the language gap.

There is a challenge for the development and delivery of training material with a need for advanced, age appropriate training for crews of vessels (including small vessels).

There is a challenge for enhanced navigation technology in the form of assistive drone technology.

There is a challenge for enhanced ANA vessel traffic management systems.

There is a challenge for liaison between product developers and ANA end-users to ensure correctly developed and used technologies. This challenge can also be categorised with Personnel, Training and Education.
